Governor Ron DeSantis of the state of Florida in the United States signed into law this Monday (9) establishing the “Day of the Victims of Communism” to be observed on November 7th. On this date, public school teachers must devote at least 45 minutes of classroom time to educating students about who the communist leaders were and what crimes were being committed in their regimes.

“Let’s tell the truth about communism in Florida,” DeSantis said. The ruling comes into effect in the 20232024 school year and proposes teachings on Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro. The norm requires teachers to teach about “poverty, hunger, migration, deadly systemic violence and language oppression” that took place under these regimes.
Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Núñez, of Cuban descent, said if there’s one place in the world where the importance of freedom is known, it’s Miami, because of the many exiles. In Spanish, Núñez said that “Cubans, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans are united in the struggle for freedom.” She added that this legislation is “important” because “not only will it educate our children, it will educate our children’s children.”
