European Union.- The summit of heads of state and government of the European Union ended today without new conclusions on the siege of the Gaza Strip as a result of the division of the bloc's member states.
This made it difficult to toughen the European position and demand a ceasefire from Israel, a demand from Spain, Ireland and Belgium.
Although they recognized the need to improve humanitarian access in Gaza and make progress on the two-state solution, the debate in the European Council ended without conclusions after Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic vetoed a new text had submitted on this topic.
After the meeting, European Council President Charles Michel noted the different sensitivities in Europe regarding humanitarian pauses or calls for a ceasefire, which he said does not cloud the shared determination to double aid.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his desire to reach a common position in the EU to end the attacks on Gaza.
“We are working hard to reach a broader consensus for peace and security (…) and are working to increase humanitarian assistance and the two-state solution,” he said.
