HRW calls on US not to veto UN resolutions on Gaza

New York (EFE). – Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the United States government not to veto UN Security Council resolutions “aimed at stopping mass atrocities” in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In an article by the group's UN chief, Louis Charbonneau, HRW recalls that Washington has already blocked two Security Council resolutions that required Israel and the Palestinian militias to respect international law.

“The U.S. voting results at the United Nations have highlighted a double standard in Washington’s commitment to martial law,” Charbonneau writes.

The US's uncompromising support for Israel in the Gaza Strip

The human rights group was highly critical of the US stance of unwavering support for Israel, even suggesting that the country risks contributing to the Jewish state's “war crimes” against the Palestinian population.

In his article, Charbonneau asks the US government to push for the adoption of a Security Council resolution to demand an end to “violations of the laws of war that have cost thousands of civilian lives” and accountability from both Israeli and Palestinian armed groups for all those responsible for committing war crimes on both sides.

On Friday last week, the United States vetoed for the second time a Security Council resolution on the war in Gaza that called for an immediate ceasefire and was supported by a hundred countries.
