Palestinian Red Crescent condemns famine in Gaza

In statements to the Al Quds news portal, PRCS media director Nibal Farsakh called for the unconditional increase in humanitarian aid to this coastal enclave, which has been the target of an Israeli military offensive since October 7.

“Gaza is literally experiencing a real famine as all citizens are now dependent on foreign aid,” the official noted.

At the same time, he warned that epidemics were beginning to spread in Gaza due to poor living conditions there in the face of daily Israeli bombings and the destruction of critical infrastructure such as sewers and sewage treatment plants.

A week ago, the World Food Program revealed that half of Gaza's population is hungry and nine out of 10 people cannot eat every day.

Citizens are now drinking contaminated water, the official said, pointing to the lack of hygiene across the area.

Farsakh pointed out that the onset of winter will increase tensions as there is no heat, blankets or clothing.

The real problem, however, is that many people sleep on the streets and this is a fertile environment for epidemics to spread.

All of this multiplies the suffering of people who are threatened with losing their lives not only through rockets, but also through hunger and disease, he emphasized.

He also condemned the Israeli army's deliberate attacks on PRCS convoys to evacuate the sick and wounded.

In this sense, he stressed that the director of ambulance and emergencies of the Palestinian Red Crescent in the southern city of Khan Yunis, Awni Khattab, has been arrested for 24 days.
