The opposition political party Podemos called on the Spanish government on Saturday to cut diplomatic ties with Israel and put the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on trial for war crimes.
“We cannot allow ourselves the enormous inconsistency of demanding that Palestine comply with international law when we are unable to even sever diplomatic relations with Netanyahu and bring him to the International Criminal Court to be tried as a war criminal “said Podemos Secretary General Ione Belarra.
During an event organized by this political group in Madrid, Belarra described the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank as “genocide.”
“What will we, colleagues, say to these babies when they grow up tomorrow? (…) How could we explain to our sons and daughters that thousands of innocent people were bombed and we did nothing,” he said.
Nearly 20,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been murdered so far in the Israeli siege, which began last October seven hours after the Islamic resistance movement Hamas began its al-Aqsa flood operation.
In statements this Saturday, Netanyahu reiterated that his country would take control of security in the Gaza Strip when the attacks end and Hamas is eliminated.
“I will not allow the State of Israel to repeat the fatal mistake of Oslo, which brought the most extremist elements of the Arab world to the heart of our country and Gaza,” he said.
“I repeat to our friends: after the elimination of Hamas, the Gaza Strip will be demilitarized, it will be under the security control of Israel and there will be no factor there that threatens us or that raises its children to destroy us.”
