The opening of the elections for the constitutional vote in Chile begins

Santiago de Chile, December 17 (Prensa Latina) Today at 8:00 a.m. (local time) the voting tables on the acceptance or rejection of the draft new constitution began in Chilean territory.

Electoral Service (Servel) reported that 15.4 million people qualified to take part in the consultation, including 127,552 residing in 65 countries around the world.

Since 2022, voting has been compulsory for everyone in the country, and anyone who fails to vote will face a fine of between 32,100 and 192,650 pesos (between $37 and $221).

To facilitate access to polling stations, the state transport service is free throughout the day, including air, land, river or sea transport in the most remote locations.

The municipalities with the largest number of voters in this referendum are Puente Alto, Maipú, Santiago and Florida in the metropolitan area and Viña del Mar in Valparaíso.

Abroad, the United States, Spain, Argentina, Canada and Australia are the countries with the highest presence of Chilean voters.

The migrant community eligible to take part in the referendum here is now led by Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Haiti and Bolivia.

Tables will be closed at 6:00 p.m. (Chilean time) unless there are people waiting to exercise this right at that time.

Servel urged people to arrive early to avoid crowds and the high temperatures forecast for much of the country this Sunday.
