Luton captain Tom Lockyer is in a “stable” condition after suffering a heart attack during a game at Bournemouth on Saturday, the club assured in a statement.
“Our medical team has confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch but was unresponsive by the time he was stretchered out,” the promoted side wrote on social network X (formerly Twitter).
He was then “taken to a hospital where we can assure our supporters that he is in a stable condition and is currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside,” it clarified.
Lockyer collapsed on Bournemouth's pitch after an hour when the score was still 1-1. The players initially returned to the locker room while the player was attended to by the medical team. The game was then finally stopped by referee Simon Hooper.
The Wales international collapsed at Wembley Stadium in May during the Premier League promotion duel between Luton and Coventry.
He then underwent surgery to correct atrial fibrillation, an anomaly which, according to the National Health Service (NHS), causes “an irregular and often unusually fast heart rate”.
