Max Payne actor James McCaffrey dies aged 65

According to a report from TMZ, Max Payne actor James McCaffrey has died at the age of 65.

TMZ released a statement from a spokesperson saying McCaffrey passed away on Sunday, December 17, surrounded by friends and family after a battle with bone marrow cancer.

“McCaffrey, one of Dick Wolf's protégés, had a successful 35-year career in television and film. He trained at the Actor's Studio and never lost his love for character creation; however, his good looks often drove him to play leading roles. ” McCaffery's rep told TMZ.

Kevin Dillon, who played Johnny “Drama” Chase on the HBO comedy series “Entourage,” first reported McCaffrey's death in a post on Instagram, saying, “We were lucky to have known you. My best friend, we will miss you.”

McCaffrey played Max Payne in Remedy's three-game series, as well as roles in other Remedy games such as Alan Wake and Control. Most recently, McCaffrey was the voice of Alex Casey from “Alan Wake 2,” a character whose physical appearance is based on “Sam Lake” from Remedy.

Remedy released its own statement in a post on X/Twitter: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey. His remarkable talent has breathed life into our characters and left a lasting impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family.

said Sam Lake of Remedy he was “heartbroken.” “We have worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was an important part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. Nobody could do what he did better than him. James was Max.” Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey. I had the honor of sharing Max Payne's role and Casey's role with him. It was a pleasure to work with him. I will honor his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences go out to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.”

Rockstar Games, which published the Max Payne series, also issued a statementwith the words: “Rest in peace, James McCaffrey, the inimitable and awe-inspiring presence who brought Max Payne to life.”

McCaffrey also had a varied television and film career, including playing Jimmy Keefe on Rescue Me. McCaffrey is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and daughter Tiernan.
