Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Steve Cooper and Nuno Espirito Santo in advanced talks to replace him.

The club – 17th in the Premier League – have decided to relieve Cooper of his duties after going six league games without a win and just one win in their last 13 games.

The formalities will now be completed, including notifying staff of the official confirmation, which will arrive on Tuesday afternoon.

And barring a late move, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Espirito Santo – who left his role at Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad last month – will take Cooper's place at the City Ground.

Forest had informed former Wolves coach Julen Lopetegui of his potential interest in the role, while the club hierarchy were also considering Oliver Glasner, the Austrian who led Bundesliga sides Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt to the Champions League.

Espirito Santo led Wolves to promotion from the Championship in 2018 and then guided them to seventh place in the Premier League.

He was appointed by Tottenham in June 2021, despite only staying in the capital for four months.

Cooper took over at Forest in September 2021 and finished bottom of the Championship, but managed a remarkable turnaround, securing a place in the play-offs and then beating Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town to win promotion to the Premier League .

Despite owner Evangelos Marinakis handing Cooper a new contract until 2025 in October last year, the 44-year-old has been under pressure all season, with Forest rarely finishing in the bottom five.

Cooper led Forest to 16th place and finished four points clear of 18th-placed Leicester City in the club's first Premier League campaign in more than 20 years.

This campaign proved equally challenging for Cooper's side, with the team embroiled in another relegation battle.

Although Forest won two of the first four Premier League games of the season – including a notable win at Stamford Bridge in early September – they won just one of the following 13 league games.

Their impressive two-goal home win over leaders Aston Villa in early November ended a run of six Premier League games without a win, but the club subsequently failed to win any of their next six league games, including a five-goal defeat at Fulham early on this month.
