The war in the region, which began in February 2022 with the Russian army's entry into eastern Ukraine, is about to end two years without any progress from one side to the other. Vladimir Putin's troops advanced around 20% of Ukrainian territory. Volodymyr Zelensky has already raised more than $200 billion in foreign aid to avoid further losses. To explain the current context of this war, Natuza interviews Nery Tanguy Baghdadi, Professor of International Politics at the Universidade Veiga de Almeida and founder of the Petit Journal podcast. In this episode:
- Tanguy analyzes the almost two years of war. For him, there were “few structural changes in the conflict and stagnation” throughout 2023. Now the Russians are trying to consolidate their dominance over the annexed territories and the Ukrainians are looking for resources to retake these territories;
- He assesses the “difficult situation” of Zelensky, who succeeded shortly after the Russian invasion in converting the great wave of solidarity from Western countries into financial and military aid, but now sees “fatigue” among his colleagues;
- Tanguy also commented on Ukraine's possible accession to the European Union after negotiations were announced to admit the country into the Union. “It is symbolic evidence that there is support for Ukraine, but it is unlikely to happen in the near future,” he explains;
- Finally, he explains the impasse over a possible deal in which Ukraine would cede 20% of its territory to Russia. “It makes sense that the Ukrainian government would not accept this. And Putin wants to make this occupation a defined situation,” he summarizes.
