Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday (December 19, 2023) that he was “sure” that the US would not “betray” his country and release a new financing package.

“We are working hard and I am sure that the United States will not betray us and that what we agreed in the United States will be fully fulfilled,” Zelensky said in an interview with journalists. “You, our North American partners, should know that we are waiting for this assistance. They know the details of what it is needed for and what its impact is,” he added.

The US Congress blocked approval of a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine in its war against Russia. Before releasing the funds, members of Congress want US President Joe Biden to approve an increase in funding to combat the entry of immigrants across the border with Mexico.

On December 12, Zelensky met with Biden at the White House to discuss the matter. The US President said at the time that the US would continue to support Ukraine “as long as possible,” but “without additional resources.”

“We are quickly reaching the end of our ability to help Ukraine meet urgent operational needs,” Biden said.

In the interview this Tuesday (December 19), the head of the Ukrainian executive also said that he expects the EU (European Union) to approve aid worth 50 billion euros, despite the restrictions imposed by Hungary. “I am confident that we have already achieved all of this. Now it’s a matter of time,” Zelensky said.
