Floods in France: A septuagenarian trapped in his car was found hypothermic after several hours

A 74-year-old Frenchman suffering from hypothermia was pulled out of his unfortunate situation at the last minute after being stuck on a flooded road for several hours on Monday with water up to the steering wheel of his car.

On Monday morning, in Courcoury, near Bordeaux, the septuagenarian would have decided to take the wheel, despite the floods that raged a few days before Christmas, while the floods from the Seugne and Charente rivers would have peaked at over six meters on Sunday afternoon, BFMTV reported.

The 74-year-old man was trapped and water flowed into the interior of the vehicle up to the steering wheel. But luckily for him, a passer-by heard his cries for help and the driver was able to be taken out of the cold of his car after a few hours on Monday, according to “Ouest France”.

The man was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia, where he reportedly spent the night.

At the same time, the small town of 712 residents has developed a shuttle system pulled by a tractor to allow residents to avoid being isolated at home and get everything they need.

“It's still a relief to know that the city is doing everything so that we can go to work and not be cut off from the world,” one passenger noted in an interview with the French television station.

A total of 16 elected officials and municipal workers have been mobilized to ensure deliveries, purchases, school canteen meals, packages and even essential medicines, said the mayor of Courcoury, Éric Bigot, while the shuttle is said to make ten return trips every day would go to France 2.

“We are adapting,” a mother told BFMTV from the tractor, while her son, who was on his way to high school, said he “should be excused for being a little late this morning.” It’s fun, but a little cold.”
