Father protests his innocence
Her father, who was extradited to Italy to stand trial in August after being arrested on suspicion of murder in his village in eastern Pakistan, cried and protested his innocence in his testimony in court on Tuesday.
“This process is not yet complete. “I also want to know who killed my daughter,” he said, according to local media reports.
Ms. Abbas' murder is one of many high-profile criminal cases in Italy involving the murder or abuse of women or girls who rebelled against their relatives' demands that they enter into arranged marriages.
After her disappearance, the Italian Federation of Islamic Communities issued a religious ruling rejecting forced marriages.
According to local media reports, the teenager emigrated from Pakistan to Italy with her family in 2016.
She is often pictured wearing red lipstick and a red headband and has since become a symbol of violence against women in the country.
Parents' anger at their boyfriend
Prosecutors said Ms. Abbas's parents were upset when they found out she had a boyfriend who was reportedly of Pakistani origin.
Investigators said they had wanted her to travel to Pakistan for an arranged marriage in 2020, but she refused, sparking a dispute that led to her living under the protection of social services for several months.
According to local media reports, she returned to the family home in April 2021 after receiving a flood of messages from relatives.
Prosecutors said she was tricked into returning and then disappeared.
Ms Abbas's parents later claimed she was killed when she returned to the family home to collect some documents.
