Several observers noted the 25-year-old's presence on the Power Play Hockey coaching and mentorship program team on Wednesday. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, management identified Patrick as a retiree with significant work experience. However, he has not yet confirmed his departure from the NHL.

The forward was selected second overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2017 NHL Draft, right after Nico Hischier (of the New Jersey Devils), and played his final game of 2021-2022 with the Vegas Golden Knights. He was limited to 25 games this season due to effects related to his concussions, such as migraines. A collision with Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche in February 2022 also had devastating consequences for his health. He became an unrestricted free agent at the end of last season as the Knights gave up on extending him a qualifying offer.

Over the course of his life, Patrick scored a total of 32 goals and 45 assists in 222 games for 77 points. He topped 30 points in each of his first two seasons before settling for a total of 16 points in his final two seasons. The Manitoban missed the entire 2019-2020 regular schedule, as well as the most recent one. So he watched Vegas win the Stanley Cup while standing on the sidelines.
