The Netflix film “Spaceman” with Adam Sandler as a cosmonaut has finally been revealed in a first exciting teaser.
Gravity, Interstellar, Ad Astra, First Man… Films about the conquest of space have given us many gems, even huge masterpieces, in the last decade. So when a new space movie is announced, we're always curious. And when Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan are there, we're even more into it. Exceptional in Unpolished gemstonesAdam Sandler has already proven that he's a great actor in the dramatic department as well, and Carey Mulligan is still great at it maestro by Bradley Cooper. We are therefore rather confident.
Especially since the synopsis is appealing: An astronaut is sent to the ends of the galaxy to collect mysterious dust, but at the same time sees his marriage on Earth fall apart. He then relies on the only voice that can help him, a creature as old as time (played by Paul Dano) who lurks in the shadows of his ship. Carey Mulligan plays the wife of Adam Sandler's character. And in case we needed another argument to jump on it on release day: the feature film comes from Johan Renck, the director of the fantastic miniseries Chernobyl. With only 24 seconds to sink your teeth into, it's difficult to get a true visual overview Spaceman. We see Adam Sandler in an astronaut suit venturing into a swampy forest without any further information. On the other hand, we hear the voice of Paul Dano, who addresses the protagonist and claims that he traveled through galaxies, black holes and time to find him. His tone is half reassuring, half frightening: It's hard to know whether the creature he plays will ultimately be an ally or not.
In an interview with Netflix, Johan Renck confirmed that Paul Dano's choice to interpret the creature was thanks to his very specific voice and diction. Adam Sandler explained his desire in the same interview: “I really wanted him to appear in a way that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know. I don't think people understand that he's not only funny, sweet, etc., but more importantly, very intelligent and really deep.
“Close the door, there’s Adam in the airlock.”
It all remains very cryptic, but this very first feature film by Johan Renck has the merit of catching our attention. Its five-star cast and this very special story have it all: Without a doubt one of the best Netflix movies of 2024. We can't wait to see Paul Dano in the role of this strange creature, which appears to resemble a strange (and huge) spider in the photo above.
