“These aircraft are entirely designed and manufactured in Spain,” explained the general director of the Airbus branch responsible for defense and space activities.

European aerospace group Airbus announced on Wednesday that it would build in Spain 16 Airbus C295 aircraft ordered by the Spanish Defense Ministry, worth 1.695 billion euros. “These aircraft are entirely designed and manufactured in Spain,” said the general manager of the Airbus branch responsible for defense and space activities, Mike Schoellhorn, in a group press release.

These devices will be assembled at the Airbus Defense and Space facilities in Seville, the manufacturer said. They would have to “strengthen the anti-submarine assets” of the Navy and the Air Force as well as their capabilities in the areas of “surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue,” according to the press release.

In the maritime patrol configuration, the C295 will be “equipped to conduct anti-submarine and surface warfare, reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.” It will also be able to carry weapons such as torpedoes.

In the maritime surveillance configuration, the aircraft will be capable of conducting “sea and land operations, such as anti-smuggling, illegal immigration and drug trafficking operations, as well as domestic and international search and rescue missions.” According to Airbus, the Spanish army already has a fleet of 13 Airbus C295s in transport configuration.
