Singapore officials file charges against airline passenger after he allegedly stole over $23,000 from others on plane

Officials in Singapore have charged a man who allegedly stole more than $23,000 from several passengers on a flight from Vietnam.

Zhang Xiuqiang, 52, a Chinese national, boarded Scoot Airlines Flight TR305 from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to Changi Airport in Singapore on December 16 when he allegedly carried a combined 23,260 U.S. stole dollars from three passengers.

During the flight, Xiuqiang managed to steal a total of over $20,948 from a black backpack, the officials claimed.

The person also allegedly took more than $1,500 from an envelope in a gray bag and more than $500 from a backpack on the plane.

According to the report, Xiuqiang was charged on Monday with three counts of theft and faces up to three years in prison.

An airline spokesperson told CNN that the person was escorted off the plane upon landing.

“Our cabin crew were alerted by a passenger to a suspected theft in the cabin and alerted the airport police,” the Scoot spokesman said. “The affected passengers were escorted off the aircraft by airport authorities for further investigation and disembarkation for the remaining passengers proceeded as normal.”

“We also advise our customers to always keep their valuables safe,” the spokesperson added.

Scoot is a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
