A powerful system strikes again. Forecast.

Atmospheric flow

Another strong blast of tropical air will hit part of the Maritimes before Christmas. Models suggest an atmospheric river will produce large amounts of rainfall in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. At first it's the rain that takes effect, but a high-pressure system stationed in Quebec risks dumping enough cold air to turn everything into snow.

Heavy rains

While calm prevails in Quebec, these regions of the Atlantic provinces will have to contend with a severe storm. Heavy rain could lead to landslides and flash floods through Friday. Up to 250 mm would fall locally, particularly in the western part of Newfoundland. In Nova Scotia, up to 100 mm is expected in the eastern part of the province.

Mega broadside

As the atmosphere cools, precipitation could solidify and create impressive snow accumulations. Some regions in northwest Newfoundland are receiving a lovely Christmas present. In fact, up to 50cm could accumulate by Friday. For the capital, St. John's, a white Christmas is unlikely but not impossible. In addition, a green Christmas is expected in most major cities across the country this year, a historic phenomenon.
