A decision that is not unanimous. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Thursday December 21 that it was “extremely concerned” about the city of Amsterdam's decision to build a large brothel near its headquarters in the Dutch capital. “The proposed location for the erotic center is in the immediate vicinity of the site,” replied the European regulator, whose headquarters are 800 meters from the chosen location.

The municipality wants to move some of the legal prostitution out of the red light district and has chosen Europaboulevard in the south of the Dutch capital to build a new “erotic center”. The resolution must be presented to the local council at the beginning of 2024. But the project sparked an outcry from sex workers who want to remain behind its scarlet neon windows near the canals of the historic center.

The residents of the area are also outraged that a “giant brothel” is being built just a stone’s throw from their homes. Even if the project is approved by the Amsterdam City Council, the municipality is planning a period of seven years for the brothel to open.
