A day earlier in the National Hockey League (NHL), forward Hendrix Lapierre scored a goal and an assist in the Capitals' 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night in Washington.
The 21-year-old Quebecer scored the first goal in the first period. Well positioned in the slot, he fired a one-timer that went through the body of goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
One signing later, the Caps' first-round pick (22nd overall) in 2020 was involved in defenseman Joel Edmundson's first goal of the season. The former Montreal Canadiens player played his 15th game of the current season.
Lapierre played his twelfth game of the season on the Bettman circuit and has now collected two goals and three assists for five points.
However, it was a success from Dylan Strome that made the difference. He took advantage of fullback Noah Dobson's presence in the box and scored a one-timer that ended the debate in overtime.
Additionally, Capitals forward Ivan Miroshnichenko played his first career game in the NHL. He was recalled from the American League at the same time as Lapierre.
For the Islanders, Hudson Fasching and Anders Lee defeated goaltender Darcy Kuemper. The latter suffered a total of 32 throws, while Varlamov was challenged 37 times.
