Review of “Anyone But You”: Clichés and more clichés – TVA Nouvelles

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a romantic comedy and Everyone but you Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are an almost perfect couple.

Bea (Sydney Sweeney, light years removed from her notable role in the series Euphoria and who needs to stop making clothes that are too small) and Ben (Glen Powell, seen in Top Gun: Maverick) meet by chance and get to know each other. Since they like each other, they arrange to meet up and the date goes wonderfully. But now Bea has a bubble in her brain and leaves Ben's apartment before he wakes up.

When she realizes she's doing something stupid, she quickly turns back, but then overhears Ben talking badly about her to his best friend (GaTa).

Since we are indeed in a romantic comedy that assumes all predictability, Bea's sister (Hadley Robinson) is going to marry her sweetheart (Alexandra Shipp) during a ceremony in Australia and, yes, Ben is on the trip too. Since the two young people hate each other and almost ruin their dream wedding, the whole family agrees to force them to become a couple. Bea and Ben then come up with the idea of the century: pretending to be in love so that they will be left alone.

Yes, all the clichés and funny situations against the backdrop of lush landscapes are completely assumed (yes, a little sun and beach is very good in my opinion), but Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell don't take themselves seriously enough. The whole thing is indigestible and some of the Gags make you laugh.

But (because there's always a “but” in romantic comedies) certain jokes descend into the vulgar (we even get a close-up of a penis) or the ridiculous. Fortunately, “Anyone But You” lasts 100 minutes and the time flies, even if we sometimes sigh at the scenes that are meant to fill the duration of the session.

The film opens on December 22nd.
