NEW YORK (AP) — Honda Motor's American arm is recalling more than 2.5 million vehicles in the U.S. because the fuel pump is defective and may increase the risk of engine failure or stalling while driving.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fuel pump impeller used in 2017 to 2020 Acura and Honda vehicles was malformed. This results in low-density impellers that can “deform and degrade the fuel pump housing” over time, regulators said, resulting in an inoperable fuel pump.
If the fuel pump module is malfunctioning, the car's engine may not start or may stall while driving, according to the NHTSA, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. Honda says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this recall.
The automaker said Thursday that it will replace the fuel pumps for all vehicles affected by the recall at no charge in separate phases. The first notification letters from owners would be sent in February.
“Countermeasure replacement parts are not available in sufficient quantities for all recalled vehicles at the time of this announcement, and American Honda intends to notify vehicle owners in a phased manner,” Honda wrote.
According to NHTSA documents, dealer notification was scheduled to begin early this week.

Earlier this week, NHTSA and Honda also announced a recall of more than 106,000 2020-2022 CR-V hybrid vehicles due to a missing fuse in the external 12-volt battery cable circuit. This could lead to a short circuit or overheating of the battery cable in the event of an accident, regulators said.
