Since the Ukrainian president is Jewish, several Jewish and Ukrainian organizations condemned the publication of such a drawing.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also commented on the controversy during a press conference Thursday morning.

“The Toronto Sun cartoon conveying anti-Semitic content of the worst kind is absolutely unacceptable,” Mr. Trudeau said during a speech in English. We all have the right to expect better from our media organizations.”

At the end of the afternoon, the newspaper apologized in a post published on its website by editor-in-chief Adrienne Batra.

“The cartoon did not meet our editorial standards, it was a mistake for us to publish it and we are sorry,” she wrote. The cartoonist behind this drawing will no longer work for our newspaper. We promise to do even better in the future.”
