Authorities did not identify or provide information about the victims, but said the incident did not appear to be related to international terrorism.

They are now working to find a motive for the country's worst mass shooting.

Czech President Petr Pavel said the killings should not be politicized or fuel misinformation.

He called for national unity and expressed his “helpless anger” over the incident.

A national morning day is planned for Saturday.

According to police, the shooter was a 24-year-old student at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, where the shooting took place.

The shooting began around 3:00 p.m. local time on Thursday.

The gunman reportedly opened fire in the university's hallways and classrooms, seemingly killing people at random.

Police officers cordoned off the area and advised people to leave surrounding streets and stay indoors during the duration of the incident.

Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda confirmed that the university's philosophy department had been evacuated.

Images shared on social media purporting to show the shooter show a man in black sitting on a balcony and holding a rifle with a scope. One student shared a picture of his classroom door barricaded to keep the shooter out.

Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan assured the public that no other attacker was present at the scene and urged cooperation in the ongoing police investigation.

The square remains cordoned off and police advise citizens to follow safety measures.

Prague emergency services confirmed a total of 14 fatalities, including the shooter, while around 25 others suffered various injuries, including nine people in critical condition.

Pavel Nedoma, the director of the Rudolfinum gallery, also located in the square, reported seeing the attacker firing shots from a window at the nearby Manes Bridge over the Vltava.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Petr Fiala immediately canceled his planned events and traveled to Prague to express his commitment to dealing with the consequences of this unfortunate event.
