Rudy Giuliani files for bankruptcy after being ordered to pay $150 million

Rudy Giuliani filed for bankruptcy in federal court in New York on Thursday, just days after a jury ordered him to pay nearly $150 million to two former Georgia election officials on defamation charges.

According to the filing, Giuliani listed debts between $100 million and $500 million and assets worth up to $10 million.

Giuliani's debts include nearly $1 million in unpaid taxes and hundreds of thousands of dollars he owes to lawyers and accountants.

He also lists pending lawsuits, including three defamation cases related to his comments after the 2020 election, that have not yet been heard and could increase his debts if he is ordered to pay damages in those cases.

“This bankruptcy declaration should surprise no one,” Giuliani political adviser Ted Goodman said Thursday. “No one could have believed that Mayor Rudy Giuliani would be able to pay such a large fine.”

This announcement adds to the list of failures suffered by the former New York mayor, federal prosecutor and former dominant figure in the Republican presidential nomination.
