Artificial intelligence has once again delivered the biggest media frenzy

Artificial intelligence has also made huge strides this year. In the European Union they want to regulate them by law, for example with facial recognition in public spaces. Will other powers respect this attempt?

What was the most sustainable theme globally this year? Is it still Russia's war in Ukraine? The crazy conflicts in the Middle East? The climate summit with the oil sheikhs? For the media, it's likely to be the speed of artificial intelligence (AI) again. Optimists praise the progress this allows. Pessimists fear total surveillance and, ultimately, the disempowerment of humans by machines.

Hardly a day has passed in 2023 without new developments in this sector. This may have motivated the EU to introduce an “AI law” shortly before the end of the year. The aim is to harmonize the rules of these systems “to ensure that they are secure and that fundamental rights and EU values are safeguarded”, according to the EU Council.
