For the media, it's likely to be the speed of artificial intelligence (AI) again. Optimists praise the progress this allows. Pessimists fear total surveillance and, ultimately, the disempowerment of humans by machines.
Hardly a day has passed in 2023 without new developments in this sector. This may have motivated the EU to introduce an “AI law” shortly before the end of the year. The aim is to harmonize the rules of these systems “to ensure that they are secure and that fundamental rights and EU values are safeguarded”, according to the EU Council.
