Georgia moves Colbie Young out of the transfer portal: How the former Miami WR fits with the Bulldogs – The Athletic

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia has once again committed to wide receiver, securing Colbie Young, a big target who was Miami's third-best receiver this year.

Young (6-foot-5 and 215 pounds) gives Georgia a physical option on the outside to likely replace starter Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, who is a senior this season. Young announced the move on his Instagram account.

In 2022, Young was Miami's second-leading receiver as a sophomore with 32 catches for 376 yards and five touchdowns. This season he had 47 catches for 563 yards and five touchdowns.

A native of Binghamton, New York, Young spent his freshman season at a junior college and has one year of eligibility remaining.

Where Young fits in Georgia

Georgia hasn't used the transfer portal liberally in recent years, but when it has, it's often receivers who target it. Dominic Lovett (from Missouri) and Rara Thomas (from Mississippi State) were added last year, and London Humphreys joined this month.

Even before the portal era, Georgia had success with another big receiver from Miami, Lawrence Cager, who was the Bulldogs' second-best receiver after his graduate transfer in 2019. In this case, Georgia saw the upside and continues to see it here.

After graduating from high school, Young was lightly recruited, then honed his skills during a year at Lackawanna Junior College, receiving offers from Miami, Tennessee and Penn State, among others. He had a strong debut season in a Miami offense that wasn't very good and posted better results this year as the offense improved.

At Georgia, he would fill the void left by Rosemy-Jacksaint, assuming he leaves. (The senior has the COVID-19 extra year if he wants to use it.) The receivers have speed and explosiveness with the presumed returnees of Lovett, Thomas and Dillon Bell, and Humphreys will contribute to that. But Young gives the team another physical option and a big target for quarterback Carson Beck.

What else is there for Georgia?

This is Georgia's third scholarship transfer into next year's program and second in two days. Defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod committed on Friday.

Georgia is the favorite to land running back Trevor Etienne, who is leaving Florida after two years.

The Bulldogs continue to look for help in certain areas, perhaps another receiver if Ladd McConkey goes to the NFL Draft, perhaps a safety if Javon Bullard declares. But they are the best signing class in the country by signing, so help for next year may come from the high school ranks.
