According to sources from the Spanish agency EFE, North American President Joe Biden would be willing to abolish immigration policies such as the Parole program for Cubans and CBP One to gain support for an aid package of more than $60 billion for Ukraine, which is facing a crisis with Russia.
Negotiations between Democrats and Republicans include proposals such as resuming expulsions at the border, increasing capacity to deport migrants and applying other restrictive measures. A government spokesman said Biden would be willing to compromise if there was enough support in Ukraine.
Talks will stretch into next year as Democrats seek to pass a $110 billion aid package for Ukraine and Republicans demand tougher measures on the country's southern border in return.
End of probation period for Cubans in the USA?
The Defense Ministry reported that it has almost run out of funds to support Ukraine's defense and will soon transfer more than $1 billion to replenish reserves sent to Ukraine, with few funds available to support military readiness of the USA.
On the other hand, negotiators have agreed on a number of immigration control measures, such as detaining asylum seekers at the border and allowing rapid expulsion of immigrants who have been in the United States for less than two years.
They have also discussed raising the initial threshold for submitting asylum claims in credible fear cases. Meanwhile, the White House is trying to keep the parole program in place, but may use it as a bargaining chip in these negotiations, which will take place in 2024.
The parole trial is currently underway in Texas, USA, and the decision on the same will take until next year. Also recently, the North American Embassy in Nicaragua announced that there is no date for the end of this immigration policy, which favors citizens of Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela.
