THE RUSSIAN COMMUNIST PARTY HAS CHOSEN ITS CANDIDATE

The Russian Communist Party, for its part, has named Nikolai Kharitonov, a veteran of political life and candidate back in 2004, as its candidate for the presidential election next March, without, however, disturbing Vladimir Putin and promising his own successor. “(Nikolai) Kharitonov's candidacy was supported in a secret vote by the overwhelming majority of participants in the congress organized near Moscow,” Central Committee Secretary Alexander Yushchenko said, according to the Interfax press agency.

On paper, the Communist Party is one of the parliamentary opposition groups, but in reality it supports the Kremlin's policies. “Our task is to consolidate the people in the election campaign so that there is victory on all fronts,” Nikolai Kharitonov told the press, referring to the conflict in Ukraine. His program is also called “Victory,” he clarified.

A journalist kissed by the Russian presidential protests

Journalist and former local representative Ekaterina Dountsova, who was disqualified from the Russian presidential election, announced that she would appeal this decision to the Supreme Court, which she described as unjustified and undemocratic, according to The Guardian. “This political decision deprives us of the opportunity to have our own representative and express points of view other than the aggressive official discourse,” she said on Telegram.

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT

The Russian election commission on Saturday ruled out the presidential candidacy of journalist and former community representative Ekaterina Dountsova, who advocates for democracy and an end to the offensive in Ukraine. The commission cited “errors in the documents” submitted by Ekaterina Dountsova To her candidacy, Russian television reported.

The President of the Commission, Ella Pamfilova, stated that she had unanimously rejected the candidacy of this 40-year-old woman in the presidential elections next spring, in which Vladimir Putin, in power since 1999, was assured of reappointment for a term of 6 years. “You are a young woman, you have your life ahead of you,” Ms. Pamfilova said, turning to the candidate.

She stated that a total of 29 people had submitted application documents for the presidential candidacy.

CORRUPTION

A senior Ukrainian Defense Ministry official was arrested on charges of embezzling about 36 million euros to buy artillery shells, authorities said on Friday, as the war-torn country faces an ammunition shortage.

According to the prosecutor's office, this high-ranking official, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of organizing “a system of embezzlement of budget funds when awarding public contracts” worth 1.5 billion hryvnia.

These diversions involved the purchase of artillery shells for the armed forces at inflated prices, the agency said in a press release.

Hello and welcome to this live broadcast dedicated to the war in Ukraine.

At least 12 people, including rescuers, were injured on Friday in a Ukrainian drone strike on Donetsk, a large city in eastern Ukraine under Russian control, occupation authorities said.

“The dropping of a grenade by a drone in the Kirov district of the regional capital today left 12 people injured,” said Denis Pushilin, head of the occupying force in the Donetsk region and the city of the same name, which has been under Russian control since 2014.

Five rescuers and city service employees were among the injured, he said.

According to Mr. Pushilin, the city was also the subject of Ukrainian artillery fire that damaged a residential building and civilian infrastructure.

The city of Donetsk, which came under the control of pro-Russian separatists led by Moscow in 2014, is regularly bombed by Ukrainian forces.

The Donetsk region is one of five regions partially occupied by Russia that Vladimir Putin claimed to annex in September 2022.
