Following the city of Rimouski's decision, the Rimouski-Neigette Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIRN) welcomed the arrival of the warehouse chain with “enthusiastic enthusiasm.”
“The arrival of the American giant is good news for our local economy. “This company, known for its unique business model, will attract significant clientele not only from Rimouski but also from neighboring MRCs,” it said in a statement posted on Facebook, adding that “challenges are foreseeable.”
The debate about the arrival of Costco in Rimouski is not new, while several small retailers are against the multinational company's project.
Business owners in the industry fear the impact of opening a Costco on their workforce and competition.
The CCIRN ensures that it is aware of the challenges that small traders face after opening the warehouse.
We assure that measures are being taken to ensure good cohesion between Costco and businesses in the area.
“We will monitor these impacts and work with our members and local authorities to reduce any potential negative impacts. It is also important to quickly create housing to accommodate new workers who may be attracted to Costco's employment opportunities,” said CCIRN Director General Jean-Nicolas Marchand.
According to data seen in the 2022 annual report, Costco has 23 warehouse stores in Quebec.
