The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, called this Sunday on the international community to immediately stop “the unacceptable and unbearable suffering of the civilian population” in Gaza as a result of the Israeli response to the attack of October 7 by the terrorist group Hamas. which he also described as “one of the cruelest in recent history”.
Sánchez, who has become one of the European leaders most demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, made the call during his traditional video conference with Spanish troops stationed abroad to wish them Christmas wishes. The Head of Government recalled that the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights had just been celebrated and expressed his admiration for the commitment and professionalism with which the Spanish military defends these principles in “a world affected by conflict “. in a very important way for the daily lives of citizens.”
In addition to Gaza, he also referred to the war in Ukraine, where 670 days have already passed since the Russian aggression, which “marked the beginning of a brutal conflict,” in which Spain responded to the “call for peace,” he said, strengthening the eastern flank NATO through military operations in countries such as Latvia, Estonia and Romania. The Spanish government, he affirmed, shows its “firm support” to the Ukrainian people “who are fighting for their freedom” from Russia.
In his speech at the Moncloa Palace, he also paid special attention to the situation in the south of Lebanon, where Spain leads the UN mission and has 670 soldiers who carry out their mission “despite the harsh conditions” Israel and the Shiite militia Hezbollah.
Sánchez estimated the number of Spanish soldiers who took part in foreign missions last year at 12,054 and praised their “colossal, impressive achievement” in “making Spain's commitment to peace a reality.” After paying tribute to the 175 members of the Armed Forces who have lost their lives in 34 years of international operations, he announced that in the coming days he would visit one of the countries where they are stationed to express the gratitude of Spanish society to convey, although without revealing which one.
Afterwards, the leaders of fifteen contingents spread around the world took the floor to thank the President for the message, to ensure that they are well and in good spirits, and to congratulate their families and the entire Spanish people on Christmas. Like Sánchez, Defense Minister Margarita Robles expressed her “great pride and gratitude” for the work of the 3,000 Spanish soldiers who will spend this Christmas Eve away from their homeland and their families.
