Christmas 2022 was marked by a massive snowstorm that swept across the east of the country, leaving thousands of people without power on New Year's Eve in both Quebec and the Maritimes.

This year the picture could be completely different.

“We are still very lucky this year. “There will be no problems with travel,” confirms Environment Canada meteorologist Michèle Fleury.

This calm weather is due to the presence of a high pressure area currently located over the east of the country. Temperatures will even gradually rise over the weekend; They exceeded the 0 degree mark in several places on Sunday, but will drop again in the evening. On Christmas Day the temperatures will be warmer again.

Clouds will also gather in the coming days. The fog is expected to clear on the morning of December 25th, but there is a risk of freezing drizzle.

As recently as Wednesday, a low pressure area currently forming in Colorado could bring rain, freezing rain or snow to the various regions of Quebec and the Maritimes.

“The low will really pass between Wednesday and Friday, so by New Year's Day it looks like it will be over and we will find ourselves back in a cold air mass, but the weather should be relatively nice,” Ms Fleury stressed.

The passage of another rainstorm early last week melted snowpack in many places in Quebec, while strong winds caused numerous power outages in the Maritimes.
