(ANSA) – ROME – During the Christmas holidays 83% stay in Italy and the mountains prevail. According to the Chamber of Commerce (Confcommercio), eight and a half million Italians packed their bags and went on a vacation.
Even in a situation of economic uncertainty, celebrating Christmas away from home is not a given. In fact, eight and a half million Italians packed their bags, but that number could rise if the two million undecided leave today at the last minute.
This is the data that emerges from the Focus on Christmas of the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory. The undisputed queen of Christmas are the mountains, chosen by one in three Italians: cities of art and large and small towns account for another 32% of global preferences, while coastal towns are chosen mainly by border residents. Another 21% are traveling to the borders of their region. The result is a panorama of destinations that reward Lazio, Trentino-Alto Adige, Campania and Lombardy, while abroad France, Germany, England and Austria are the most frequently chosen countries.
Those who decided on this “short vacation” have taken into account the expenditure, which will total around 3,000 million euros. The majority, 83%, will remain in Italy, despite the desire to fully return to pre-pandemic habits, given the increase in appreciation of foreign destinations, almost all European, compared to 2022.
One in four Italians will take advantage of the entire Christmas holidays and allow themselves to spend three to four nights at their destination. One in five people who stay longer than five nights are likely to combine Christmas and New Year into a longer holiday.
For others, the stay away from home is a maximum of 2 nights, mainly in places close to their home or without leaving their own region. And particularly interesting signs of vitality can be observed in the travel sector, also favored by the additional public holidays that the calendar provides this year.
Compared to 2022, the proportion of those who stay in their region of residence will decrease from 57% to 40%, while the number of travelers who continue to leave their region while remaining in Italy will increase from 36% to 44%. In addition, the proportion of those planning a trip across the border rose from 7% to 17%. (ANSA).
