Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade | Tom cod fishing is long overdue –

(Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade) The mild weather conditions prevailing in Mauricie are causing a delay in the start of the 86th annual Atlantic Tomcod fishing season on the ice of the Sainte-Anne River in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade. la-Perade. Anne de la Perade.

The association of outfitters of the Sainte-Anne river reported on social networks on Monday morning that the opening date of the popular small-fish fishing in the canals was still undetermined.

In recent weeks, the ice covering the river has been irrigated, with the goal of reaching 10 inches thick. With such a layer of ice, the installation of hundreds of fishing huts can begin, but on Monday it was not yet thick enough.

Environment Canada forecasts the mercury in Mauricie will remain near freezing from Christmas Day through Thursday. A drop in temperature is not expected to occur until overnight next Friday and the weather is expected to remain cold for a few more days.

The fishing season for small canal fish has traditionally started around Christmas for several years. Last year, however, the opening of the 85th fishing season suffered from mild weather, but the Sainte-Anne River Outfitters Association said in February that around 75,000 visitors had visited the site.

The Atlantic cod undertakes a long migration to breed each winter in fresh water, the Sainte-Anne River and the Batiscan River. The Sainte-Anne River is important because it produces the majority of the cod caught in small-scale fishing in the canals.
