By Laila Bassam (Reuteurs) An Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital, killed a senior adviser to Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Monday, according to three security sources and Iranian state media.

The sources told Portal that the adviser, known as Sayyed Razi Mousavi, was responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran.

Iranian state television interrupted its regular news broadcast to announce that Mousavi had been killed, describing him as one of the Guard's most senior advisers in Syria.

State television said he was “one of the companions of Qassem Soleimani,” the head of the Guard's elite Quds Force who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in 2020.

CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

Iran's Revolutionary Guards commented on the incident and said Israel would pay for the killing of Mousavi, who held the rank of brigadier general in the Guards.

“Without a doubt, the usurping and brutal Zionist regime will pay for this crime,” the Guard said in a statement read on state television.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

For years, Israel has carried out strikes against targets it claims are linked to Iran in Syria, where Tehran's influence has increased since it backed President Bashar alAssad in the war that broke out in Syria in 2011.

Earlier this month, Iran said Israeli strikes killed two members of the Revolutionary Guard in Syria who were serving as military advisers in the country.
