The fire completely destroyed a heritage building in Old Montreal and killed seven people. The event served as a shock treatment for the Quebec government to better regulate Airbnb-like platforms.

The owner, who had several of the building's rooms on this rental property, came under fire because the building violated several fire hazard regulations.

He and a business owner who rented accommodation in the building through the Airbnb platform are the targets of a $22 million class-action lawsuit filed by the father of one of the victims.

Airbnb has also been in Quebec's crosshairs since a series of measures were announced to better regulate accommodation rentals on the platform. There have also been calls for a public inquiry to shed light on this incident.

The SPVM stated that the fire was of criminal origin.
