Ukraine claims it destroyed a Russian ship in an attack on Crimea – Al Jazeera English

One person was reportedly killed in an attack on Novocherkassk, which Ukraine said was used to transport Russian drones.

The Ukrainian air force says it attacked a Russian naval ship at a base in Russian-occupied Crimea, which Kiev said was carrying drones for the Moscow war.

The Novocherkassk, a large landing ship, was “destroyed” in its airstrike, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Tuesday on the Telegram news platform.

According to the Interfax news agency, the Russian Defense Ministry and officials confirmed the overnight Ukrainian attack. The ministry said the ship was “damaged” after Ukraine used guided missiles fired from aircraft against the ship in the Crimean port city of Feodosia.

One person was killed and two injured in the attack, Moscow-appointed Crimean Governor Sergei Aksyonov said on Telegram, adding that six buildings were damaged and their residents evacuated.

The Ukrainian Air Force said: “People say so [the Novocherkassk] transported Shaheds,” referring to Iranian explosive drones that Russia has regularly used to attack Ukraine.

Ukrainian commander Mykola Oleshchuk also released a video of an explosion at Russia's Feodosia naval base.

“And the fleet in Russia is getting smaller and smaller! Thanks to the Luftwaffe pilots and everyone involved for the delicate work!” he wrote.

In 2014, Russia captured and annexed Crimea from Ukraine.

On Telegram, Aksyonov said the attack on Feodosia sparked a fire that had been brought under control. “An enemy attack was carried out in the Feodosia area… The port area is cordoned off,” he wrote.

Footage shared by several Russian news agencies on Telegram showed violent explosions and fires over a port area.

Ukraine and Russia have often exaggerated the losses they have allegedly inflicted on each other since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

They also downplayed their own casualty and equipment losses.

In recent days, Moscow claimed to have seized control of the eastern city of Maryinka, but Kiev denies this.

Kiev and Moscow have also each claimed they managed to shoot down each other's warplanes, with each side denying any losses.

In April 2022, Ukraine sank the cruiser Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Soviet-era Black Sea Fleet.

Moscow said “an ammunition explosion” caused a fire and forced the crew to evacuate, and the ship sank while being towed into port.
