First trailer for Star Trek: Strange New World released

Paramount has unveiled the first trailer for Star Trek: Stranger New Worlds, the latest Star Trek series to focus on the USS Enterprise (the first time the series has fully returned to the iconic ship since Star Trek: The Enterprise ended in 2005.

Strange New Worlds is technically both a spin-off and a prequel that begins with the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. takes place approximately ten years before Kirk becomes captain).

Thus, the crew of the Enterprise is a mixture of familiar and new names for fans. The ship is piloted by Captain Pike (Anson Mount) with Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, his first mate. Ethan Peck’s Spock is there, but as a research assistant, as is Nyota Uhura, who is still a cadet at the moment (played by Celia Rose Gooding).

A more old-fashioned take on the Star Trek show.

The trailer seems to be more in tune with establishing the overall vibe of the show, which seems to be about trying to bring back the more episodic, exploratory style of earlier Trek series (as opposed to the more serialized nature of recent shows like Discovery or Picard). The nostalgia factor is also felt throughout, with voice-overs rapturously celebrating the wonders of space travel and the exhilarating sounds of the original Star Trek theme playing in the background.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many installments in Paramount’s resurgent Star Trek franchise on the Paramount Plus streaming service, along with Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts on Paramount Plus on May 5th.
