France: Man accused of killing his wife and four children arrested

“The suspected perpetrator” of a femicide and multiple child murder in Meaux in France's Seine-et-Marne region, east of Paris, was arrested in Sevran this morning, police said. The man has been actively sought since yesterday evening. He is accused of killing his four children, aged between 9 months and 10 years, and their mother, his partner, in their apartment in Meaux.

This would be another multiple infanticide committed by a father in the last three months in Ile-de-France, in the Paris region. At the end of November, a 41-year-old man went to a police station to confess to the murder of his three daughters, aged between 4 and 11, in Alfortville, Val de Marne. A month earlier, a gendarme killed his three daughters and then committed suicide in his home in Vemars in the Oise Valley.

“I know why I am in police custody.” This was said by the 33-year-old father suspected of killing his wife and their four children on Christmas Eve in their home in Meaux, not far from Paris. The city's prosecutor, Jean-Baptiste Bladier, reported this at a press conference, saying that the man – arrested in Sevran at his father's house – had “talked about his personal discomfort and depression” at the time of his arrest to justify his actions. The man is currently in the hospital and has not yet been interviewed by investigators. According to a police source confirmed by the prosecution, the in-depth analysis of the video surveillance images made it possible to trace the suspect, who has been monitored for depressive and psychotic disorders since 2017. Prescriptions for prescription sedatives were found in his home. According to the prosecutor's office, the statement of the suspect's sister made it possible to contact the man's father and mother, who cooperated a lot. The man has, among other things, a history of domestic violence: In November 2019, he stabbed his wife in the shoulder blade a month and a half after giving birth, but the woman refused to report it. An investigation was launched into the matter and the 33-year-old was taken into police custody before being admitted to a psychiatric ward. He had explained that he did not want to harm his beloved wife: “The stabbing started by itself,” he justified himself, according to the public prosecutor. The case was dismissed due to insanity.
