On Friday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution to allow more humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. The approval came after the United States threatened for several days to veto the original text, which called for an “urgent and sustained cessation of hostilities.” Instead, the watered-down version of the resolution adopted Friday calls for measures to “create conditions conducive to a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Thirteen members voted in favor, while the United States abstained. Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, responded to the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council: “Only an immediate ceasefire is enough to alleviate the massive suffering of the civilian population that we are witnessing.” […] “It is shameful that the United States managed to paralyze the resolution and use the threat of its veto to force the UN Security Council to water down a much-needed call for all parties to immediately end the attacks.”
