Mariah Carey and Bryan Tanaka have split after seven years together, the dancer confirmed Tuesday.
In an Instagram post, Tanaka wrote that the split was “amicable” and showed appreciation for the Grammy Award-winning singer, with whom he worked as a dancer and creative director.
“It is with mixed emotions that I share this personal update on my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” he wrote. “Our decision to pursue different paths is mutual, and as we embark on these separate journeys, we do so with deep respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we shared. The memories we created and the artistic collaboration are forever etched in my heart.”
“I can’t wait to continue my journey, knowing that my passion for inspiration, dance and creative arts will shine through in the chapters that follow,” he continued.
Tanaka and Carey first met when Tanaka joined her “The Adventures of Mimi” tour as a backup dancer in 2006.
The “All I Want for Christmas is You” singer first confirmed their relationship to the AP in 2017.
“I'll just say, 'I really don't talk about my personal life.' Because that's what I used to do, and it really worked for a minute a while ago,” she said at the time, smiling. “I just don't feel comfortable talking about my personal life. … Me and my friend don’t want to do this.”
Rumors of their breakup surfaced online last month when fans noticed that Tanaka wasn't accompanying Carey on “Merry Christmas One and All!” Trip.
Carey has not released a public statement about the split.
A representative for Carey did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Instead of commenting on the breakup, Carey – dubbed the Queen of Christmas – was busy promoting her tour, which ended on December 17, on social media.
On Tuesday, the singer posted a message thanking her fans for allowing her holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas is You” to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart again for the fourth consecutive year. Carey also celebrated breaking Spotify's record for most song streams in a day.
“I can't thank you enough for making this Christmas (and honestly, the entire season!) so festive for me,” Carey wrote on Tuesday afternoon, a few hours after Tanaka's post. “Even though it's December 26th, Christmas never ends for me (ha ha!) and I'll continue to share some of our festive moments from the last week with you!”
