A Russian naval ship stationed in occupied Crimea was damaged in an airstrike by Ukrainian forces, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.
Photos and videos shared on social media show that Novocherkassk was destroyed, with rubble scattered hundreds of meters around.
The 112-meter (360-foot) long ship was capable of carrying ten tanks and about 225 soldiers.
According to the Ukrainian army, it was recently used to transport weapons and soldiers to the Zaporizhzhia region, which is partly held by Russian forces.
According to Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhnyas, Kiev's troops in southeastern Ukraine have withdrawn from a town in the Donetsk region, Marinka.
He commented on Moscow's claims that the Russian army had completely captured Marinka.
Zaluzhnyas said there was nothing controversial about the withdrawal: “This is a war, so the fact that we have now withdrawn to the outskirts of Marinka and have set up positions behind Marinka in some areas is not something that will cause any public outcry could. Unfortunately, that’s how it is.” That’s what war is like.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to bury its dead. On Tuesday, relatives and friends in the Ukrainian town of Irpin joined the widow of a 31-year-old Ukrainian soldier in mourning his death.
The community gathered for a memorial service for 31-year-old Yuri Antonenko, who was killed in fighting near Marinka.
The ceremony was attended by Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn, who said the city would host three to four funerals a week.
Markushyn said the current moment was a “turning point” for Ukraine, describing it as a fight for the country's existence.
