At the age of 90, she completed her master's degree

A 90-year-old woman graduated with a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of North Texas, becoming the institution's oldest graduate.

The graduate in question, Minnie Payne, originally from South Carolina, wanted to continue learning after graduating with a Bachelor of General Studies at age 73.

After a career in a mill, several years as a housewife and a few more years as a substitute teacher, Ms. Payne wanted to go back to school after her retirement at the age of 68, according to the university writes in a press release.

She particularly took courses in journalism.

“I have always worked with words,” she explains. I've always loved writing, so I went back to school almost immediately [après ma retraite] improve.”

After completing her first degree in 2006, at the age of 73, she worked as an editor for several publications, including in Dallas and Houston.

When she wanted to continue her journalism studies at master's level, she turned to interdisciplinary studies and took as many courses as possible remotely.

Minnie Payne says it wasn't always easy for her to be an unusual student given her age.

“I really had to study and spend sleepless nights, but I did it,” she says.

The graduate considers it normal that she returned to study at this age.

“I knew that by doing something I loved and being constructive, I was becoming a better person for myself and my family,” she says. Every day I try to do something to improve my life and the lives of those around me.”

Her achievement makes her the oldest graduate of the University of North Texas.

“The persistence with which she completed her degree at age 90 is impressive,” said Billy Roessler, the university’s vice dean for graduate studies. She had a goal and she succeeded.”

Although Payne has earned her master's degree, she has no plans to stop and plans to continue learning “one way or another.”
