Gaston Glock was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied mechanical engineering in his hometown before designing prototype pistols.

In 1982 he won a tender from the Austrian Armed Forces by presenting a weapon with numerous nonmetallic components that was cheaper, lighter and easier to disassemble than those of his competitors.
