Plot, subplot and explanation of the film
Right from the start of the action, the audience is introduced to the epicenter of the narrative's chaos: Oliver Quick (Keoghan), a scholarship student who has difficulty fitting in with the numerous cliques at the elite Oxford University. It immediately becomes clear to the protagonist that the elite English upper class is dominated by the charming and popular Felix Catton (Elordi), a rich and cool boy who everyone wants to get along with and be close to.
When Oliver notices this “social hierarchy,” he decides to get closer to the cool student with the goal of becoming his friend. This only really happens after he helps Felix, who has a flat tire on his bike. Afterwards, they become close friends and exchange confidences, sad memories and even a fondness for alcohol. During the young man's funeral, one of the film's most disturbing scenes occurs, in which Oliver literally has sex with his friend's muddy grave.
Some time later it is the turn of Venetia, who is also found dead in the bathtub, having slit her wrists out of great grief over the loss of her beloved brother. Shaken by the death of her only two children, Elspeth asks Oliver to stay in the villa, perhaps as a reminder of her children. But Sir James intervenes when he soon realizes that the boy is actually just a social climber. Hidden from his wife, he offers the protagonist a generous check in return for his departure from Saltburn.

Years later, after a jump in time, Oliver reads in the newspaper in a café in London that Sir James has died. Coincidentally or not, Elspeth enters the shop at the same moment and recognizes him. Over time, the two become closer again and she asks him to move into the old mansion because she feels lonely due to her widowhood.
Another time jump occurs and now Felix's mother is bedridden and intubated. And here Oliver Quick, still in a coma, makes his big revelation to her: everything that happened in the past, including the deaths, was carefully planned by him with the goal of getting Saltburn.
