With the help of a YouTuber interested in this unsolved case, human remains linked to a person who went missing in Missouri in 2013 were found Sunday.
A local videographer named James Hinkle, who runs the YouTube channel “Echo Divers,” alerted authorities when he found a car submerged in a private swamp, the Camden County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Mr. Hinkle was looking for clues related to Donnie Erwin, who had been missing since 2013 in Camdenton, Missouri.
“When I realized that Donnie was a veteran and lived an hour and a half away from me, I knew I could help with the search,” he explains in an interview with CNN.
The license plate of the submerged car matched Mr. Erwin's, prompting authorities to investigate further.
Human remains were later found nearby, as was an artificial hip similar to Mr. Erwin's.
They were analyzed by forensic experts who were able to confirm that they were indeed those of the missing man.
This discovery comes almost 10 years to the day after the disappearance of Mr. Erwin, who was last seen on December 29, 2013.
