The procedure could last until the end of the afternoon or even the beginning of the evening, the FAE said on Thursday.

If representatives agree, it could be a deal in principle that would put an end to the FAE's pressure tactics since negotiations began, including the indefinite general strike that began on November 23.

This agreement will then be recommended to the members of the FAE, who will be asked to ratify it at their general meetings after returning from vacation.

The FAE, which brings together 66,500 teachers, resumed negotiations with Quebec on Tuesday after a 24-hour break.

On December 21, FAE members voted unanimously in favor of the membership proposal Negotiation blitz, provided union proposals can be discussed.

The Common Front is still in negotiations

Meanwhile, negotiations continue at the so-called “central” table, where the Common Front, on behalf of the four associations it represents (CSN, CSQ, FTQ, APTS), is negotiating the salary aspects of the next employment contract for public sector employees.

In recent days, all member unions of these associations have reached an agreement with the government at so-called “sectoral” tables where job-specific working conditions are negotiated.

The Common Front recently recalled that its 420,000 members could trigger an indefinite general strike in 2024 if a satisfactory agreement is not reached at the central table by the end of the year.

No recommendation from the FSE

In response to claims by former FAE president Sylvain Malette that the Federation of Education Unions (FSE-CSQ) did not recommend the agreement reached with the government on December 23, the union announced on Thursday that it did not This has not been the case since the last hearing it attended in 2020.

“Following the 2015 negotiations, the FSE has reviewed its approach and does not make any recommendations to its members,” said its spokeswoman Sylvie Lemieux. “We are not talking about a fundamental agreement here, but rather a proposed regulation to leave the decision to the members. It's a question of inner functioning. »

Delegates from the FSE, which represents 60% of teachers in Quebec, approved on December 23 the draft regulation presented to them, the result of a lightning negotiation between the association and the government.

In an interview with La Presse on Tuesday, former FAE president Sylvain Malette said that the FSE does not recommend its members vote for this agreement because, in his opinion, it is “disappointing”.
