14yearold boy is attacked by shark and dies in front of his father on a tourist beach in Australia

A 14yearold teenager tragically died this Thursday (28) in South Australia. The young man was surfing when he was attacked by a shark. His leg was torn off and he died. The incident occurred near Ethel Beach in Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula. The destination is known for its cliffbacked surroundings and is considered touristy and popular with surfers.

The attack occurred around 1 p.m. local time and the body was recovered from the sea shortly afterwards, police reported. According to the Australian press, a rescue helicopter arrived at the scene of the accident, but the teenager had already died. The species of shark that attacked the victim is not yet known.

The teenager was traveling with his own father, who witnessed the event. According to witnesses, the victim was attacked about 30 or 40 meters from the beach. “Another resident ran out, jumped on the board and paddled to help him. The shark swam around them while the guy pulled the boy out of the water. There was a lot of blood. He got him to shore, but I think it was too late,” they reported. More serious shark attacks were reported in Australia last year. This is the fifth occurrence in the south of the country alone. One of the most recent cases was that of Bridgette O'Shannessy in November, who was attacked while enjoying the sea in the city of Adelaide. The 32yearold suffered serious head injuries in the incident and the shark's teeth became lodged in her skull.

On the west coast, near the island of Varanus, a “shark rider” was bitten after jumping onto the back of a threemeterlong animal and ended up in the hospital. Near land in New Zealand, a shark jumped into a boat with six people on board, frightening the crew.
