The United Nations (UN) Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said on Friday, December 29, that the Israeli army fired on one of its aid convoys in the Gaza Strip. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
“Israeli soldiers fired on an aid convoy returning from the northern Gaza Strip using a route designated by the Israeli army. Our international convoy leader and his team were not injured, but one vehicle was damaged.” wrote on X the director of UNRWA in Gaza, Thomas White. “Help workers should never be targeted,” he added.
In response to a question from Agence France-Presse, the Israeli army said it would “verify” this information.
A “traumatized” and “exhausted” population
On the night of Thursday to Friday, the head of UN humanitarian operations, Martin Griffiths, sharply criticized the conditions for the delivery of aid to Gaza. “Convoys in the sights of fire. Delays at border crossings he wrote on X.
He denounced the fact that humanitarian workers were “themselves displaced and killed,” recalling that “the traumatized” and “exhausted” population was crammed into “an ever-shrinking piece of land.”
“Three levels of inspection before trucks can return. Confusion and long queues. “An increasingly long list of rejected products,” he also lamented. Mr Griffiths referred to “an impossible situation for the people of Gaza and for those who come to their aid” and stressed: “The fighting must stop.” »
