INTERNATIONAL – The rocket flew about 40 km in Polish airspace. On the Polish television channel TVN24, Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski warned this Friday, December 29, morning that an “unidentified object” from Ukraine had entered near the town of Zamosc, not far from the border with Poland. According to him, the event was related to Russia's missile and drone attacks on several major cities in Ukraine on Friday.
“Everything indicates that it was a Russian missile that entered Polish airspace. We discovered it via radar. He left this room a few minutes later for Ukraine, the Chief of Staff of the Polish Army, General Wieslaw Kukula, was able to tell the press this afternoon. “We have radar confirmation, both nationally and from allies,” he added.
“NATO stands in solidarity with our valuable ally”
The rocket flew over Polish airspace for three minutes, said Maciej Klisz, head of operations for the Polish army. “We sent our forces there, aircraft to intercept and shoot down if necessary, but the weather (overflight) and the way it maneuvered (…) made it impossible and allowed the missile to reach Polish territory left,” General Klisz continued explained.
After a large wave of attacks against Ukraine, the Polish air defense system was put on alert during the night from Thursday to Friday, he continued. A ground search has been initiated at the spot where the missile's radio signal was lost, Army officials said.
After this incident, Polish civil and military authorities held emergency meetings and President Andrzej Duda spoke with the NATO Secretary General. “NATO stands in solidarity with our valuable ally and is monitoring the situation. We will stay in touch once the facts are established. NATO remains vigilant,” said Jens Stoltenberg on X (formerly Twitter).
In November 2022, a Ukrainian missile struck the Polish village of Przewodow near the border with Ukraine, killing two civilians. Before its origin was identified, the missile's impact on the Polish village had raised fears that NATO would be drawn into the conflict and the war in Ukraine would significantly escalate, with Poland protected by a collective defense commitment from the Atlantic Alliance.
